Age of Empires II: HD Edition will get a new official expansion in 2015
Age of Empires II, old school PC gamers will never forget the name.
It was and still remains one of the best Real-Time-Strategy games ever made.
The sequels in the series were not bad either, Age of Mythology, which was released in 2002, just three years after AOE2, took us to the mythical worlds of Greece and Atlantis, the Sands of Egypt, and the cold Norse lands. Age of Empires 3 which came two years after AOM, was the first in the franchise to feature HD graphics. But no matter what, neither AOM nor AOE III, could find success like AOE II.
Its captivating charm, led to many fans requesting Microsoft to remake it with HD graphics, or even just release an expansion. But the company shattered many a dream, when it shut down Ensemble Studios, the game studio behind the Age of Empires series, in 2009.
However all was not lost, AOE II had a wide community who continued to make mods, which introduced new civilizations, and unique units for each civilization. It wasn’t long until Microsoft noticed the attention a particular mod was receiving. It was called Forgotten Empires, and had over a million downloads.
One of the mod’s main features, was that it supported new resolutions, which made the game look much better than the original game did. Widescreen monitors had become the standard, and 1080P resolutions promised a whole new world of fun. Back in 2012, Microsoft acquired the mod, turned it into an official port and resurrected the game, and launched it on Steam, as Age of Empires II: HD Edition.
It included the popular Steam Workshop which allowed the game to be modded. A year later, the game received a second expansion, called Age of Empires II: The Forgotten. It was the first expansion since The Conquerors, which was released 13 years back, in 2000.
The Forgotten expansion added 5 new civilizations to the game: Incas, Indians, Italians, Magyars and Slavs, and seven new campaigns. It also adds new unique units and technologies for each civilization, more maps, gameplay modes, maps, an improved and challenging AI.
And today, Microsoft announced the incredible news. Age of Empires II: HD Edition will get a new expansion this year. The expansion does not have an official name or an ETA (Estimated time of Arrival) yet, but the company did mention what we could expect from it. The 2015 expansion will include more new civilizations, campaigns, game modes, units, and more.
They also posted a teaser image showing one of the new units: A Camel Archer. (pic featured in this article). So we can safely assume that it will be a part of a desert civilization, such as Egyptians.
You can buy Age Of Empires II: HD + The Forgotten Expansion for $24.99 from Steam.
I still remember playing Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, back in 2000, when I was still a school kid. I got it as a gift during my summer holidays, and instantly fell in love with it. It has been 15 years, and I still play this game, in the HD version, its totally worth the money.
