Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 Review

Filecritic_Editors-Pick_2_@2xAshampoo Burning Studio 16 is an advanced software application for recording and copying CD, DVD and Blu-Ray disks. With the help of the program you can perform a lot of operations, namely, you have the possibility, to create data disks, audio CDs and MP3 or WMA disks, movie and slideshow DVD, beautiful covers, and so on.

You can download 10-day trial version from the official Ashampoo website to test all its great features. If the 10-day trial is not enough for you, you can extend it by providing to the developer your email and test the program for additional 30 days for free.

As a rule the installation process does not require additional skills. During the installation you have to select an installation language(fortunately, the program supports more than 30 languages), accept the license agreement and create shortcuts.

Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 has got a very colourful and easy to use interface. If you do not like the default skin of the program, you can easily change it and create your own one by loading any desired image from the computer or downloading them from the Internet (for example, deep ocean, back to future, and so on). Additionally, you have the possibility to choose the color by dragging a special color slider.

The main window of the program is divided into two parts; there is a vertical sidebar with all available functions on the left and a main working area on the right.

The sidebar consists of four sections- Burn, Create + Burn, Design + Print and Miscellaneous.

Burn section includes utilities for creating new disks and backing up files and folders.

Create and Burn offers utilities for creating audio CDs, MP3 or WMA disks and ripping audio CDs on the one hand and creating videos and slideshows on the other hand.

Design and Print- in this section you have the possibility to create cases for your disks, etc.

Miscellaneous- here you can find tools for copying disks, burning image files and some other advanced functions, for example, the utility for erasing rewritable disks, etc.

Interface

Burn Data- Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 allows you to burn any data to the disk, for example, photos, videos, text documents, and so on; add everything without limit! With the help of the program you can create simply a new disk or a disk with more advanced features, namely, New disk + disk spanning (i.e. such a disk that will be split into several parts if added files exceed the capacity of the disk and then burn to multiple disks), New disk + autostart (i.e. autoplay disk; you have the possibility to edit menu, add music, splash screen, buttons, text, and so on) and Encrypted disk (i.e. a disk protected with a password to avoid its unauthorized use).

In addition, Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 allows you to update previously created disks by adding new files and folders to them.

Movie and Slideshow- with the help of Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 you can create amazing movies or slideshows and burn them to DVD or Blu-Ray disks. You can edit your movies and slideshows before burning, i.e. the program allows you to add various themes, logos, subtitles and music effects to the movies, cut areas of the video, split the video into several parts, and a lot of others. Created movies and slideshows can be immediately burned to DVD or Blu-Ray disks.

In addition, Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 also allows you to burn videos and Blu-Ray disks from a folder on the one hand and create VCD or SVCD disks on the other hand.

Backup and Restore- it is needless to say that Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 is an irreplaceable application for burning and creating high-quality optical disks but it can do much more for you. With the help of the program you can reliably protect your important files against unexpected data loss, i.e. in other words, back up your files and save in proprietary Ashampoo extension ASHBAK.

Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 allows you to create backup copies of files and folders stored on the computer on the one hand, and on any removable devices connected to the computer, for example, smartphones, tablets, music players, etc. on the other hand. Of course, created backups can be stored on the computer, burned to disks or transferred to the external hard disk or USB flash drive.

The process of backing up files and folders is very easy and includes three simple steps.

First of all you have to select files or folders for backup; all you need is to place a check mark next to the files that you want to back up. In this step you can also edit some exclusion rules, i.e. specify what file types must be excluded from the backup process.

The second step is very important because it allows you to select the backup location and specify some additional backup options. You can record the backup immediately on CD, DVD or Blu-Ray disk after creating or save it on the internal hard disk or removable media.

In addition, Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 offers three backup options- Password protection, Backup compression and Backup splitting.

Your backup contains a lot of confidential files? Do not worry! Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 allows you to protect it with a strong password; so nobody can restore it without your permission.

Your backup exceeds the capacity of the disk? It is not a problem for the program because it offers two very useful functions; firstly, Compression (it will reduce the size of the backup), and, secondly, Size Splitting (it will help you to split the backup into several parts and burn them separately onto multiple disks; you have the possibility to select the desired splitting size, for example, 32 or 64 MB, and so on).

And, finally, after specifying the storage location, the program will record your backup on optical disk, save it on hard disk or any removable media connected to the computer.

Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 also allows you to back up any external device connected to the computer, for example, external hard drive, smartphone, USB drive, and so on. With the help of the program you can create a new backup or update an existing one. You have the possibility to back up all file types on the external device or select only specified ones, for example, images or music, and videos or documents and then burn them onto any disk types, i.e. CDs, DVDs or Blu-Rays.

Of course, it is very easy to restore files backed up with Ashampoo Burning Studio 16. All you need is to select the desired backup from a list for restoring or specify a custom location if your backups are located on a CD, DVD or Blu-Ray disk or any other removable media. You have the possibility to restore backups to their original location or manually specify a new one.

In addition, the program allows you to configure overwrite options, i.e. you can overwrite files with their backups, and so on.

Music- Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 offers a lot of different options for music lovers; with the help of the program you can create audio CD or MP3 and WAV disk, copy music files to disk or rip audio CD.

Create Audio CD- do you want to create an audio CD which can be played on every music player? It is not a problem for Ashampoo Burning Studio 16. With the help of the program you can create high-quality audio CDs easily. First of all you have to select audio files and add to the program (supported audio file types are FLAC, MP3, OGG, WAV and WMA); and after adding them specify some options, namely, change equalizer effects (for example, acoustic, electronic, rock, and so on), normalize the volume of tracks and insert pauses between the tracks (you have the possibility to leave unchanged 2 second pause or manually specify the desired pauses for every track. In addition, Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 allows you to play tracks before burning with the help of the inbuilt player.

In the final step, before starting burning audio CD, you can specify some additional write options, for example, speed (from 16 x through 40 x) and number of copies. The program can also simulate recording before burning or copy all data to hard disk image first. That is all; after that the program will burn your audio CD.

Create MP3 or WMA disk- with Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 you can also create MP3 or WMA (i.e. Windows Media Audio) disks. Before starting a new project you have the possibility to specify an output format, bitrate (from 8 through 320 kbits/s) and the volume of tracks. Then you must add desired MP3 or WMA files onto the program for burning. After analyzing and converting input files, the program will burn your audio files to the disk and then enjoy it on your CD player.

Copy music files to disk- if you want just copy music files to the disk instead of creating audio CD or MP3 disks, you can take full advantage of this feature. Simply add files to the program and after specifying some options (for example, disk verification, disk at one mode, and some others), you will get all your files on the disk for using and playing on the computer or storing on the optical media.

Rip Audio CD- with the help of Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 you have the possibility to rip audio CDs, i.e. extract audio tracks from them. All you need is to insert the disk into the optical drive and the program will load all tracks after analyzing the disk content.

The program allows you to specify the name of the artist or album, the year of creation and genre. You can also rename or play the tracks before burning.

In addition, you can change a disk cover by loading a suitable one from the computer or downloading it from the Internet.

Before extracting audio tracks, you can configure a lot of options, for example, select an output audio format (i.e. MP3, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, APE, WMA or WAV), output folder profile (for example, CD quality, good or medium quality), read speed (for example, 40 x, etc.) and bitrate (from 8 through 320 kbit/s).

Additionally, you can create a playlist in one of formats offered by Ashampoo Burning Studio 16, for example, M3U, XML, WPL, and so on.

After entering the title and specifying the contents of the disk, the program will open the inbuilt cover editor where you can add graphic files to the cover, enter the desired text, apply some themes and objects, and so on.

Miscellaneous- in this section you will find utilities for copying disks, creating disk images, etc.

Copy Disk- you have got a lot of purchased optical disks and you want to make copies of them? You can easily do that with the help of Ashampoo Burning Studio 16. After reading the entire contents of the source disk, the program will help you to copy it and then burn to another disk.

Disk Image- Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 offers advanced functions for working with disk image files. With the help of the program you can burn, create and browse images. The program currently supports the following image file types- ISO, CUE / BIN and ASHDISK.

For burning image files you only need to browse for them and then after specifying some options (i.e. speed, burning mode, etc.), you can easily burn images to any type of optical media.

Creating image files is very important because it allows you to store the contents of CD, DVD or Blu-Ray disk in the image format and later burn it to another disk.

With Browse Image feature you can open and extract files and folders from the image file.

Advanced Functions- Ashampoo Burning Studio 16 includes some advanced functions which allow you to perform some additional operations with disks. With the help of the program you can modify existing disks by adding new files and folders; create a data disk by specifying some advanced settings, for example, ISO version (for example, ISO 9660- level 1, and so on), UDF version (for example, UDF 1.50, etc.), boot image type (for example, 1.44 MB floppy disk boot image, and so on), erase rewritable disk and finalize disk.

Yes, the program does have a lot of bells, lights and whistles. And when I first installed it, they all worked. Unfortunately, I will go months without using it. I discovered if it is not use for 30 days, the program deactivates some of the modules. Not only does this make no sense, but it’s very annoying to purchase a program and have parts of it fail by design in less than a year. I’ve had some interaction with Ashampoo, but it still does not work. This feature was not mentioned anywhere prior to purchase. Had I known of it I wouldn’t have purchased the program. So all buyers beware!
