Free Virtual Keyboard is a portable keyboard application for Windows

A few days ago, we told you how to use the on-screen keyboard in Windows 10.Free Virtual KeyboardThough it is a good app, it lacks even the most basic customization options.

You cannot even change the color of the keyboard, which makes it difficult to use in a program which may have the same or a similar color. And there is no option to change the layout of the keyboard either.

This is possible in a free app called Free Virtual Keyboard which does a better job. One thing I like about the application, is that it is still being updated by the developer. You know what this means, yes the program works on Windows 10 and almost all prior versions including Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8 and 8.1. You can click on the title bar of the application to access its menu, it has very few options. You can use it to change the color of the app to a predefined theme. Similarly you can change the keyboard type (layout) from the menu.

There are three types of keyboard layouts in Free Virtual Keyboard: A Basic QWERTY keyboard with a number row, one which has 6 rows including a set of Function keys, and one more which has the Function Keys and Arrow keys (but replaces the transparency button). There are alt group keys support too, which switches the keys for umlauts. These are useful for many European languages, and also for phonetically spelling out words, for linguistical purposes.

The keyboard is resizeable, allowing you to work easily with any app’s UI with ease.

If there is one major fault in the app, I would say it is the poor way of selecting the customization options. You don’t actually see the options, but click on the setting which randomly applies the changes. So you may have to keep changing the options till you find a theme or layout which you may like. Another downside in the program, is the lack of a numpad (also known as the ten key pad) and the keys for Insert, Print Screen, Page Up/Down, etc.

There is no word prediction in the Free Virtual Keyboard application, so you will have to type words yourself, but perhaps we are expecting too much from a free software.

Download Free Virtual Keyboard from the official website’s sidebar, for the various options installer/portable. The application weighs just over 200 KB in the Zip portable archive format.
