But let’s face it, the new operating system is messy.

New users find it very complicated, and non-user friendly. This is in fact very reminiscent of Windows 8 in several ways. Speaking of which, the key thing which made Windows 8 flop miserably was the lack of the Start Menu.

Windows 10 brought the Start Menu back, after listening to user feedback. But did it accomplish the job? No, simply no. The new Start Menu as you may have noticed comprises of tiles and a gigantic list of all the apps you have. In other words, navigating through the Start Menu is a real pain.

Fortunately, we still have the good old Desktop Shortcuts, to access our frequently used apps. Most programs that you install place a desktop shortcut, or offer to do so, during the setup process. But what if the application didn’t place the shortcut on your desktop, or what if you had deleted it and want it back?

There are two easy ways to add shortcuts.

How to create a desktop shortcut in Windows 10

1st method:

1. Click on the Start Menu
2. Select All Apps.
3. Navigate throught the list of apps till you find the one you want a shortcut for.
4. Right-click on the app listing, and select “Pin To Start”. Don’t worry, this may sound odd, but this is the step you want.
5. Now a tile for the app should be placed in the right pane of your Start Menu.
6. Make sure you have the Windows Desktop in the background. i.e., minimize all other windows.
7. Click and hold on the Tile (in the Start Menu), and drag it to your desktop, and drop it.

Presto! The shortcut for the app will be added to your desktop. And this works for any programs, even the Windows Store apps.

Some applications do not have a Start Menu folder, or you may have chosen not to have a folder, during the installation of the program. So use the following method to create a desktop shortcut for such applications.

2nd method:

1. Click on Start
2. Select File Explorer
3. Navigate to the folder where the application is installed.
4. Right-click on the .EXE of the program, and select “Send To” from the context menu.
5. Select “Desktop (create shortcut)”
