How to free up disk space in Windows 10

How to free up disk space in Windows 10? This is a common question that we get. A lot of users rely on the popular Piriform CCleaner application for this.

While such applications can be helpful, everyone of those has one flaw. They do not free up disk space which is used by Windows’ System folders.

This is especially noticeable, when you update Windows 10. For example, I have a Samsung 256GB SSD which has an actual storage capacity of 233GB. It usually has around 200GB free because I only use it for Windows 10 and specific programs. I found that the free space dropped to about 170GB when the computer had downloaded the Windows 10 April Update.

After I installed the update, I was able to recover some of the storage space back, about 10GB to be precise. This was still a concern, because the computer seemed to be using a lot more space than usual. Where did those files go? Here’s what I did.

How to free up disk space in Windows 10

  1. Press the Windows key or click on the Start button.
  2. Type in the words “Disk Cleanup” (without the quotes) and hit enter. OR Open File Explorer and right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. And then under the General tab, select “Disk Cleanup”
  3. This will bring up the Windows Disk Cleanup tool.
  4. Hit ok, in the Disk Cleanup window. This process may take a minute or too depending on how much data, there is to clean. You can see the total disk space which will be recovered by the cleaning process.
  5. This does not clean up the system files. To do that, repeat steps 1 to 3, and then click on the “Clean up system files”. You need to select C: drive again.
  6. The tool will run a scan, and check the Windows 10 system folders and includes them to be cleaned up. This also checks the Windows Update files (Windows Old folder),
  7. If you are certain that you will not revert back to the previous version of Windows, mark the folder to be cleaned up (Windows Update Cleanup)
  8. Wait for the process to complete, and you should get your storage space back.
