Jarte is a free replacement for WordPad

by AshwinFebruary 20, 2016

WordPad is undoubtedly one of the most used processors in the World.

jarte word processor features

Do you know why? Not because it is feature rich, it is to some extent but not the best.

And certainly not because it is easy to use, but because it is free, as it is part of the Windows operating system.

Some users, especially professionals, or writers will not prefer to use an application with more features, more formatting options, customization, etc. This is where Jarte excels. It is a free word processor, which has a Ribbon-less UI for distraction free writing.

There are three layouts: The one mentioned above is the compact one,  there is a notepad like UI, called the minimal layout, and another called the Classic layout (which has large buttons). By default Jarte uses the compact layout.

The toggle-able bars include a ruler, find bar, line guide, tabs (switch between documents), bookmark gutter, reference bar, status bar, a quick bar (for file actions and basic formatting) and a tool panel (sidebar).

The tool panel in the application is quite good, and consists of various options including file tools (open, save, etc), font tools, paragragh tools, and spell checking. The spell checker is good, but the free version of Jarte lacks background spell checking, and instead, you need to manually run it.

Tip: You can use the free application called tinySpell for enabling background spell checking.

The reference bar supports integration with the WordWeb dictionary and thesaurus application, which can be useful in both writing and reading scenarios.

In addition to support for TXT text files, Jarte supports RTF (Rich Text Format), DOC and DocX files, yes the Microsoft Office document format. Though you can only save files in TXT, RTF and DOC. For opening DocX files, you will need to download and install the Microsoft’s Office Compatibility Pack, but since it is a free download, it shouldn’t be much of an issue. DocX files can be edited and saved in one of the other three formats.

An unusual feature in Jarte is that it allows the user to paste a clipboard content by simply using the scroll wheel (middle mouse button). You can also use the scroll wheel to zoom into the document (hold the control key + scroll using the mouse). Or just use the bar on the top to do so.

Download Jarte for free from the official website. It is available for 32-bit and 64-bit computers.
