Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac released, here is all you need to know about it
Popular Windows security software maker, Malwarebytes, has released the first version of its scanning tool for Mac OSX systems.
The new software is called, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac.
But the security application, is not quite the same as its Windows counterpart. Back in March this year, Malwarebytes had acquired an app developer called The Safe Mac, and its security product called AdwareMedic.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is just a rebranded version of AdwareMedic. The latest release however is also an updated version. In spite of being released as a rebranded app, it does have some rather useful features. The app specializes in the detection and removal of adwares, but it can also scan for and remove various malware, trojans and more.
However it does have one major disadvantage. It does not offer real-time protection which the Windows version does, so you will have to run the app manually to perform scans occasionally, to keep your Mac free from adware and malware.
On the bright side, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac reportedly runs incredibly fast, and is touted to complete a scan in 6 seconds. The app has a small footprint (RAM usage) and that the UI is very simple to use. You can see the UI in the screenshot featured above.
BetaNews reports that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac removes most malicious files easily, but occassionally it requires a reboot of the system. In rare cases, the app will also display an exclamation mark, which signifies that a dangerous malware has been found, which is difficult to remove. To help the user, the app will provide a link to a relevant page with instructions on how to remove the malware.
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac from the official website. It is a free download. The security app is compatible with Mac systems running on Mac OS X 10.7 (or higher), and requires just 40 MB of disk space to install. You can check the full system requirements in the page linked above.
On a sidenote, Windows users of Malwarebytes, will be seeing a major change to the app’s licensing system. In a bid to prevent piracy, the company has upgraded from a flawed licenses system to a new and improved one. The latest version of the Windows application, will prompt users to answer a question on how they obtained the license. Pirated users will get a year’s worth of protection for free, while legitimate users will be granted a new license.
