Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware is a new security application to prevent ransomware attacks

Ransomware is a rising threat today, and have been found to infect several computers around the World.

Earlier this month, we reported about one particularly nasty one, called Ransom32, which happens to be the first Ransomware based on Javascript.

If you aren’t aware what a ransomeware does, here is a very brief description. It is a malicious program which installs itself on a computer and encrypts all the files stored on the hard drive, and locks them behind a password. And it is almost impossible to decryot the files without the encryption key.

The ransomware then displays a ransom note asking users to pay a sum of money to the attackers, within a limited time, to get the encryption key. But sometimes security researchers do get crack the encryption algorithm, and release the decryption method for free, to help affected users.

The biggest problem with ransomware, is not just the damage it causes (data loss), but the inability to remove the the infections. So in this scenario, the best defense is not a good offense, but a good defense itself. Simply put, the best solution is to prevent ransomwares from attacking.

And this is what a new product from the renowned security firm Malwarebytes does. The application is called Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware, and is currently available in a Beta test. Malwarebytes had originally teamed up with EasySync Solutions, which had created an application called CryptoMonitor, to prevent ransomwares.

Malwarebytes then acquired the company, and hired Nathan, the developer of CryptoMonitor, to work on its own anti-ransomware application.

The best part of Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware is that it is incredibly easy to use. In fact, all you need to do is just install it and keep it running in the background. There are no scan settings, no signatures or heuristics. Instead it works pro-actively (in realtime) to stop the evil ransomware. The UI is very similar to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which is a good thing.

This is what the company states in its blog post:

Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware detected all of the latest and most dangerous ransomware variants right out of development and into beta 1.

That does sound very promising indeed. And it is also worth noting that Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware is compatible with all anti-viruses. So you won’t have any issues with the app conflicting with other security products.
