Popular free image painting app, MyPaint has been updated to version 1.2.0.

MyPaint Filecritic

In case you haven’t hard of the app, here is a brief description.

MyPaint is not a new project at all. It is an old app from 2004, and the last stable version of which was released three years ago, in 2013, according to Softpedia. The app was not discontinued as some believed, but was in development for a whole three years. And a new build of it has finally been released in an official stable version.

I hope you will excuse the very amateurish attempt to draw, as seen in the screenshot above. The intention was to show that anyone can draw using MyPaint, and not just artists or professionals. The app though is used by many artists and professionals, and even by creators on DeviantArt and the like.

And also take a look at the toolbar, it has a plethora of options available at your disposal. The latest version of the app has a refreshing UI and is quite user friendly. The app now features a new flood fill tool and two new sidebars.

There are some new brushes available, and some new layers as well.So you can draw with a variety of options, even in freehand. Speaking of which, the freehand tools now have brand new cursors which are quite-modern looking.

Another brilliant addition to MyPaint, is the new automated backups setting, which saves all your work, with options to recover them on startup. Read the full change log at the developer’s website, for there are far too many to explain here.

By default, the app saves images in the.ORA (Open Raster Format), but you can export it to more common image formats such as JPEG or PNG.

Download MyPaint from the official website. It is merely a 37mb download and is available for 32-bit and 64-bit computers. It is an open source app, and you know what that means. It is completely free and devoid of any advertisements. Oh and in addition to the Windows version, MyPaint is also available for Linux and Mac OS X.

MyPaint is a great app, and can be used to draw and edit pictures, create new portraits/sketches and so much more. Think of it as a GIMP or Photoshop alternative. And of course you can even create your own build of the app using the source code available at the MyPaint GitHub repository.
