Microsoft has released a new extension for Google Chrome.

This happens to be the first web browser add-on from the Redmond company.

And this isn’t the first time Microsoft has released an app for one of Google’s products. The Redmond Compnay has a plethora of applications available at the Google Play Store for Android devices, which includes the like of its personal digital assistant, Cortana, its mail app Outlook, and its Office apps.

Google on the other hand has almost zero apps for Windows 10, unless you count the Search App. But what can we do?

Let’s take a look at what the Office Online for Chrome extension has to offer.

The extension is not going to offer Office Online services for free. You will still need a subscription to the service to use it. Installing the extension, puts an icon in the top right corner of the browser. You can click on it to login to your Office Online account, which will allow you access to all your content on the cloud.

The icon may not look great, but unfortunately, it is the center piece of the extension, and all features it has can only be accessed through it.

You can use the extension to open any Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Sway file stored on your PC. And the browser extension’s power doesn’t end here, you can even create a new file using the extension’s features. Additionally, you can also access your recently opened files in Office Online using the extension’s aptly named “Recent Documents” option . The add-on also allows you to use all of the online productivity suite’s formatting and layout options too.

The Office Online Chrome extension also allows you to access all your files stored in OneDrive and OneDrive for Business cloud storage accounts, so you can files on the go and any changes you make to them are saved instantly.

The best part is that the Office Online for Chrome extension, allows you to use all the aforementioned services without having to need the standalone Office suite installed on your computer. In fact you don’t even have to be on Windows to use the service. You can use it on any system which has Chrome, be it Linux, Mac, or even a Chrome OS device.

Get the Office Online for Chrome extension, from the Chrome web-store. The extension weighs a mere 261KB to install. Sadly, there isn’t any Office Online add-on for Mozilla Firefox, at least not yet.
