O&O Defrag 18 Pro Review

by April 28, 2015

The stability and health of the computer is an important task for any user. And there are a lot of reasons why it is so important. Every day we perform various actions, for example, run multiple applications, etc., and they greatly affect the performance and speed of the operating system. If you have noticed that the computer is getting more and more sluggish and unresponsive, it means that its health is out of order and immediate steps must be taken for improving the performance and reliability.

One of the reasons why computer is so slow may be hard disk fragmentation which arises for the reason that we permanently make a lot of different operations on the computer, i.e. copy, delete, move files from one location to another, etc. As a result, files are scattered throughout the hard disk surface and it is very difficult for the read-and-write head of the disk to access them and provide users with quick and immediate information on requested files and applications. It is necessary to use special programs to prevent the process of wearing of hard disks called defragmenters.

O&O Defrag 18 Pro belongs to such kind of programs and it allows you to perform any defragmentation tasks with the hard disks and greatly improve its performance and speed.

Download and Installation

The latest version of the program can be found and downloaded from the official O&O website. It should be noted that it is an online installer just 755 KB in size) so you need the Internet connection for downloading the setup file which is about 30 MB. The program is available for both 32 and 64-bit versions of the Windows.

There are four different versions of the program – Free, Professional ($29.95), Workstation ($39.95) and Server ($199.00). The free version is very limited in features and offers only very basic defragmentation methods and functions and it is not compatible with Windows 8. The Workstation and Server ones have got additional advanced network functions and they are of use for workstations and servers.

The ideal version which meets any requirements of home users is the Professional one. It has got everything for reliable and safe management of HDD and SSD disks just for this reason I have chosen it for this review.

The installation pf the program is straightforward. After downloading the setup file, you need to accept the license agreement and choose one of the installation methods – Complete (all program components will be installed) or Custom (it is recommended for advanced users and allows them to customize those program features which they want to install). That is all. After clicking on the Install button, the program will be installed on the computer.

The Interface of the Program

The program is divided into three parts:

Ribbon Bar – it contains three tabs – Start (here you can find tools for running disk analysis, performing defragmentation procedure, etc.) Extras (in this tab are collected some additional tools for checking drives, wiping free space and some others) and Options.

Start Tab

Extras tab

Options tab

Drive List – in this part of the program is displayed information on all drives which are available on the system. By default it contains 12 columns, i.e. Drive status, Total files, Degree of fragmentation, etc., but you have the possibility to add some hidden columns or remove any of displayed ones very easily accessing the Settings Menu, additionally, you can also sort the columns ascending or descending and align them left, center or right.

Drive List 2

Cluster View – it displays small blocks called clusters and each block has got certain colors, for example, fragmented blocks are colored in red, compressed in light blue, etc. If you want to change colors of the blocks, just click on color explanation, a new small window will be opened where you can customize or add the desired colors according to your taste.

At the bottom of the program window, there are six tabs:

Cluster View –  displays the drives in clusters

Time View

History –  contains information on every running task performed by the user, namely, the number of accelerated files, reduced fragments, etc.

Drive Status – in this tab, is shown the status of the selected disk chosen for analysis, for example, its size, the number of files or folders, fragmentation level, etc.

Job – in this tab is collected info about every job run by the user.

Reports – it contains detailed reports on every action carried out by the user.

File Status – here you can view the list of fragmented files which can be sorted out by categories, for example, large and system files, fragmented locked files, etc.

The Main features of the program

Automatic Defragmentation

O&O Defrag 18 is able to defragment disks both automatically and manually.

The automatic defragmentation is the easiest and the most convenient way to achieve the maximum optimization results. All you need is to configure this method once and no more worry about optimizing the disks again. The program will work in the background unnoticed by the user.

If you would like to take full advantage of automatic maintenance of the disks, you can easily do that by accessing Quick Start Button on the Start tab.

O&O Defrag 18 offers three different methods of automatic defragmentation:

Automatically Optimize Hard Disk in the Background

Optimize when computer is not in use (so called Screensaver mode)

Defragment drives at a specified time – the program allows you to run defragmentation process at a specified time, you have the possibility to specify the desired day and time and run disk optimization weekly, bi-weekly, every three weeks or monthly.

Additionally the program has got options for optimizing SSDs with TRIM technology, wiping free space on drives, and so on.

Once configured the program will perform defragmentation process regularly at a specified time or during the idle state of the computer and it will do that in the background without interrupting your current task.

Automatic

Manual Defragmentation

Before starting the manual defragmentation process O&O Defrag 18 allows you to determine the level of fragmentation of the hard disk by analyzing it; in order to perform analysis of the disk, just select it in the Drive List and click Analyze button. Upon successful completion of the disk analysis, the program will create a detailed report which can be viewed as a HTML document in any web browser.

O&O Defrag 18 Pro offers five defragmentation methods and each of them provides efficient and thorough disk defragmentation. They are as follows:

Stealth (hotkey – Ctrl + F10)

Stealth

Space (hotkey – Shift + F10)

Space

Complete / Name (hotkey – Ctrl + F11)

Complete name

Complete / Modified (hotkey – Shift + F11)

Complete modified

Complete / Access (hotkey – Ctrl + F12)

Complete access

The first two methods, i.e. Stealth and Space are the fastest which take very little time to complete and need a small amount of free space (only 5% per cent) and do not consume large system resources. During Stealth defragmentation method all files are defragmented but it does not provide thorough consolidation of fragmentation in order to optimize computer free space. The Space method performs accurate defragmentation of all files and efficiently organizes them by placing into the free slots of the hard disk but its possibilities of optimization and consolidation are limited and it is less effective as compared with Complete defragmentation methods. The main advantage of Stealth and Space methods lie in their quickness and they are good for initial defragmentation of the system and for computers which have got very few available resources because they do not require huge CPU and RAM usage.

The last three defragmentation methods, i.e. Complete / name, Modified and Access provide complete defragmentation of all available files (including large, system and MTF files) and thoroughly optimize their placement. The difference between them lies in optimization strategies. Thus, using Complete / Modified the files are arranged in accordance with their modification; it is very effective and useful for those disks on which files are regularly modified. During Complete / Name method all files are organized and sorted according to alphabetical order which provide a quick launch of the operating system and libraries on the disk where the file modification is rarely made. Complete / Access method deals with lately accessed files and sorts them according to this rule at the end of the disk.

Boot time defragmentation

With the help of this tool you can perform defragmentation of those files which are locked and cannot be defragmented when the Windows operating system is in use. After enabling this function the program will perform defragmentation of these locked files during the system startup (only once or during each system startup).

Boot time defragmentation

Defragmentation of files and folders

The program seamlessly integrates itself into the Windows explorer and allows you to defragment any files and folders without opening the program just using the right-click of the mouse.

Extras

Check Drives – before starting the defragmentation of the disk, it is recommended to check drives for errors. The process of checking does not take much time and a thorough report will be viewed as a HTML document in any browser and contains detailed info on the disk status, the number of fragmented files, etc.

Wipe free space – by means of this tool you can optimize free space of the disk by overwriting it with zeros and clearing up from the remnants of deleted files.

SSD TRIM– SSD drives use other technology as compared with HDDs, but O&O Defrag 18 Pro allows you to work with SSDs, as well. Thanks to TRIM technology it improves the performance of SSDs and optimizes unused drive space.

Connect to computer – this feature of the program allows you to establish connection with other computers on the Network and remotely manage them.
