Piriform CCleaner 5.12 released, focuses on browser cleaning improvements

Piriform has released its monthly update for its Windows cleaning app, CCleaner.

Piriform CCleaner 5.12

Unlike CCleaner 5.11, which proved to be a rather major update with support for Microsoft Office 2016 and allowed uninstalling Windows Store apps, CCleaner 5.12 appears to be a minor update.

Piriform says that CCleaner 5.12 includes better cache cleaning support for Mozilla Firefox 42, but to be fair, the browser maker had released version 42.0 of its app way back, in the first week of November, and CCleaner 5.11 has been working fine without any issues, with the latest version of Firefox.

The same can be said about Google Chrome support in the cleaning app, which once again includes some undisclosed improvements in cleaning the Download History of the Mountain View company’s browser. CCleaner 5.12, also includes improved detection and cleaning of portable browsers, though it is not clear which browsers these tweaks impact.

The app has also received yet another change under the hood,  this time to include better skipping of the User Account Control (UAC prompt) on Windows 10, and while Piriform has not said what the change does, we observed that it does start up and display the notification slightly faster than the prior version used to. And we also observed a similar speedy experience with the custom rules window.

A notable absentee in the change-log is Windows 10’s new browser, Microsoft Edge. And it is likely that Piriform may not have had time to include full support for the latest version of the browser, as Build 10586 was released about two weeks ago, and has still not tolled out to all users. It still works fine with Edge 25.10586.0.0, although it is a tad slow to clean it.

Piriform touts the latest update does the job of cleaning, a simple even process in the newest of browsers,we are yet to see it include support for the latest app on the block, Vivaldi, which is quickly winning over users from other web browsers. We would certainly love to see CCleaner clean out the residue in Vivaldi, as the browser is based on already supported browsers such as Chromium, just like Opera, and of course Google Chrome.

On a side note, Piriform’s system monitoring utility Speccy, is one of the apps which has been reportedby many users, to be automatically removed by Windows 10 Build 10586, and the company says it is working on a fix, probably for better compatibility, and will roll out an update for the app soon.
