Q-Dir is a free File Explorer replacement application for Windows.

It is actually very old and popular, and is constantly updated.

Q-Dir is also called as Quad Explorer, and there is a reason why. It has four tabs (quad), whoich allows you to browse 4 different folders in a single window. This saves you a lot of time, when transferring files from one folder to another. Speaking of which you can drag and drop files and folders from one tab to another. This even works when dragging files from other apps.

The UI isn’t the greatest, but that shouldn’t be an issue. The program was designed to have a minimalistic toolbar, and so it can use all of the available screenspace for the 4 file explorer tabs.

If you find it difficult to navigate between the 4 tabs (it really shouldn’t be), change the Tree View to a single one from Extras > Tree View > One for All. This will put a single tree on the left sidebar, to allow you to switch between folders easily. When enabled, you will have to click on a tab, to automatically have the tree to list the selected tab’s parent folder location, and vice versa.

An added advantage to the “One for all” Tree View mode, is that it allows you to preview images. Click on the magnifying glass in the left sidebar to preview the image. It can even display the preview of PDF files if you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

And of course you can perform all of the regular file management options like copy, paste, rename, cut, move, create new folders, etc, with Q-Dir. It also allows you to search your folders (using Windows Search), and also ha san optional web search feature called i=net feature (can set it to use Google).

Q-Dir also allows quick access to most of Windows System tools like Run, ShutDown, Command Prompt etc.

Download Q-Dir for free from the official website. The file manager app offers full suppot for Windows 10, 8, 8.1, 7, Vista, XP and even Win98 and 2000-2008. Q-Dir is also available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The best part is that Q-Dir can be used as a portable app, even from your USB Flash Drive (memory stick). The program is available in 26 languages. The app weighs less than half an mb (512kb)

It may not be as powerful as the paid options, but Q-Dir is a good free replacement for Total Commander, XyPlorer and Directory Opus.
