Recuva Professional Review
Recuva Professional Review
I am more than sure that everybody will agree with me that data loss is the most terrible thing but unfortunately very often it is impossible to avoid this loss. In such cases users must use special programs that help to restore those deleted files. Luckily there are a lot of such programs on the software market that can easily and effortlessly to recover lost files but regrettably most of them are paid and very expensive.
Before buying such programs, it is worth trying a free program called Recuva. Recuva is a very fast and user-friendly application to recover deleted files, it is able to restore almost everything. This program provides recovery of deleted files from hard drives that are installed on the computer on the one hand and any removable media connected to the computer such as memory cards, USB flash drives, etc. on the other hand.
Recuva is a creation of a famous software company called Piriform which is also known as an owner of very popular programs such as CCleaner, Defraggler, and Speccy.
Download and Installation
The program can be downloaded from the official Piriform website. First of all you must decide which version of the program you want to use. Recuva comes in two versions – the standard version with EXE extension for direct installation on the computer and the portable one which does not require installation. As for us, we have chosen the standard EXE version for our review. The installation file is not big, less than 5 MB. The program is multilingual and available in more than 30 languages.
Interface of the Program
The user interface of the program is extremely simple and easy to use. The main window is divided into two parts: there is a results pane on the left where you can view the restored files and their path and a preview pane on the right showing some info about the files. Above these panes you can see a drop-down menu for selecting drives and removable media to scan, a button for starting the scan and Options button through which you can configure some settings of the program, for example, interface language, view mode, scanning options, and so on.
The Main Features of the Program
Supported File Systems
Currently the following file systems are supported:
FAT 12, FAT 16, FAT 32, exFAT, NTFS, NTFS5, NTFS + EFS
Supported Removable Media
Recuva supports a wide range of removable media. It is more than enough to mention some of them, for example, SmartMedia, MemoryStick, Floppy disks, Compact flash cards, smart Media Cards, Secure Digital Cards and many others.
It also supports HDDs and SSDs, USB Flash drives, and external hard drives.
Search for deleted files and restore
Working with the program is very simple. It is suitable for both experienced users and novices. Recuva offers two scanning modes for searching and restoring deleted and lost files – Wizard and Advanced mode. The former is of use for unexperienced computer users that do not have enough skills and perform those operations first because it provides them with step by step instructions of every action which must be carried out. Everything is performed automatically, all what you need is to follow those instructions. Advanced mode allows the users to specify the desired steps manually and choose what they need.
Let me describe those two modes more fully.
After starting the program you will be welcomed with Recuva Wizard window which will help you to perform all necessary steps and recover deleted files.
Just click Next. In this step you have the possibility to select those files which you want to recover. The program supports the following file types:
Pictures – BMP, JPEG, JPG, GIF, PNG, TIFF and RAW
Music – AAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, MP1, MP2, AIF, WAV and WMA
Documents – DOC, DOCX, ODP, ODG, ODF, ODT, ODS, PPT, PPTX, PDF, XLS and XLSX
Video – AVI, FLV, 3GP, MOV, MPG, MP4 and WMV
Compressed – 7Z, CAB, BZIP2, GZIP, RAR, TAR, WIM, X2 and ZIP
Emails – the program supports recovery of deleted emails from the following clients- Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Windows Mail.
After selecting the desired file formats for recovery you can proceed to the second step and choose a location where Recuva must search the deleted files. You can choose media card, Ipod, My Documents folder, the Recycle Bin or manually define a specific location.
That is all. Now Recuva will start the search process for deleted files. The hard drive with capacity of 465 GB was selected for the search by me and I limited myself to only graphic files. Recuva managed to find 43 image files in less than in 14 seconds.
In the last step you can view detailed information about each restored files. On the right side of the program is located an inbuilt viewer with the help of which you can preview found files and get some additional details such as size, state, creation and modification date, last access time, etc.
In the main window you can see a full list of found files (Tree and Thumbnail view is also available in the Options Menu) and three different colors next to them are red, yellow and green. The red color means that the file is unrecoverable because it has been overwritten with other info, yellow – partially recoverable and red – unrecoverable.
After selecting those files which you wish to restore, simply click on Recover button and choose the location for saving them, for example, another partition of your hard drive or any other removable media such as USB drive, external hard drive, etc.
This mode of scan does not differ much from Wizard one. The main differences between these two modes lies only in the method of performing actions – in Wizard mode you are guided by the program while in Advanced one all steps are performed by you. Just select the desired drive or any removable media connected to the computer to scan from the drop-down menu, specify the file type to be searched (i.e. pictures, video, and so on) and click the Scan button. In addition, you have the possibility to search for file contents by typing its full name or format, for instance, *doc or *MP3, etc.
Deep Scan Option
It is more than probable that the scans performed in the Wizard and Advanced modes are unproductive and not all needed files are found and recovered by Recuva. In this case you can take full advantage of enabling Deep Scan option which program offers for conducting a more thorough scan. Of course, it is lengthier and time-consuming but the possibility of recovery is more probable.
Recovering Files from a USB Drive
In addition, Recuva allows you to search and recover deleted files using a USB flash drive. This is really a great feature of the program because it will be always at your disposal everywhere if the need arises.
Secure Overwriting of Files
The program allows you to overwrite the found files and make them inaccessible to others. The program offers four different methods of file overwrite:
Simple – all files are overwritten in one pass
DOD 5220.22-M– in three passes
NSA – in seven passes
Gutmann – in 35 passes
You can take full advantage of this great feature of the program because it allows you to make the confidential files unobservable and permanently remove them from your hard drive.
Windows 2000 – Windows (both 32 and 64-bit versions)
There are no minimum memory or hard drive requirements
If you have accidentally deleted necessary files or data, there are no need to buy expensive programs to get them back. With the help of Recuva you can fully restore all lost data and information. The main advantage of the program is a great efficiency on the one hand and free of charge on the other hand.
I think that Recuva must be present on every computer so I definitely recommend it.
