Microsoft Edge battery life test video claims it outperforms Chrome and Firefox

Microsoft isn’t one to shy away from unorthodox marketing techniques to promote its products. And the Redmond company has proved that again, with its latest Microsoft Edge battery life test video.

The video made by the company features three laptops running on the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. All three devices look similar, and Microsoft claims they are identical.

Each laptop used a different browser, one was running Mozilla Firefox, one on Microsoft Edge, and the other one on Google Chrome. The laptops were set to play the same video (which was in HD resolution) over and over in their respective browser till the battery dies.

This is actually a very [...]

Mozilla Firefox usage dropped again in 2015, as Chrome’s popularity grew by 8%

Mozilla has not had a good year in 2015, with its browser ending with a mere 12.13% of usage shares.

Firefox actually had a good run, growing steadily for 5 months (between February to June 2015).

As you can see from the chart featured above, thanks to Netmarketshare, the browser climbed up from 11% and went past 12%. But then usage began to drop steadily, from July to October.

This can perhaps be attributed to Windows 10’s launch. The new operating system came with Microsoft Edge, as the default browser, overwriting any user-defined settings for the browser (for eg: Firefox). This happened despite users choosing to preserve their settings and apps, which [...]

AVG AntiVirus force-installed a Chrome extension called AVG Web TuneUp, which is critically vulnerable

AVG Antivirus has been found to have force-installed a vulnerable Google Chrome extension called AVG Web TuneUp.

The issue was reported by one of Google’s Project Zero researchers, Tavis Ormandy, at its Product Forums.

It is worth noting that Ormandy has reported several security issues in Antivirus products in the past, including some in ESET, Kaspersky, to name a few.

The AVG Web TuneUp extension was found to add many JavaScript API’s to the browser, which can be used to hijack Chrome’s search settings, and also the new tab page in the browser. AVG’s extension reportedly bypassed Chrome’s malware detection rules, and [...]

Google adds support for Unwanted Software Detection to Safebrowsing

Google is no stranger to battling online threats and protecting users, it first began the process about 8 years ago.

Yes, it was in 2007, that the Mountain View company introduced Safe Browsing.

This security protocol in Google Chrome, protects users from malicious websites and any malware they may contain.

Google is constantly updating the way Safe Browsing works, to make sure it detects new techniques used by phishing scammers and bad websites.

One of the evil things that this protocol protects users is from is Unwanted Software, which Google terms UwS, and pronounces it as ooze (ridiculous, but that’s what it calls it). These are actually similar [...]
