Windows 10 Build 17704 brings several improvements for Microsoft Edge

Windows 10 Build 17704 has been released for Windows Insider Preview users. The new version is available for Fast ring and Skip ahead users. Microsoft Edge is the one in focus, with quite a few new features. The Edge icon now carries a “BETA” marking to help identify the official version and test releases. But, why brand it on an Insider preview build, which clearly itself is a beta operating system?

Edge is also getting the Fluent Design, which is most noticeable in the tab bar. The currently active tab (in focus), will appear stronger compared to the background taps, which now have a depth effect (a slight blur), a feature which is like what you can add to [...]

Microsoft Edge battery life test video claims it outperforms Chrome and Firefox

Microsoft isn’t one to shy away from unorthodox marketing techniques to promote its products. And the Redmond company has proved that again, with its latest Microsoft Edge battery life test video.

The video made by the company features three laptops running on the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. All three devices look similar, and Microsoft claims they are identical.

ChakraCore engine officially open sourced by Microsoft

Back in December, we reported that Microsoft would be open sourcing part of its Chakra browser engine in January 2016.

And the Redmond company, true to its word, has just done the same.

The engine, based on Javascript, has been open sourced at the popular GitHub repository, under the project name ChakraCore. It is licensed under the MIT License, so that rules out GPL licensed code being used in it. But ChakraCore can be used in GPL based projects, because that’s how the licesning works.

Gaurav Seth, the Primary Program Manager for the Chakra team, announced the news at Microsoft’s official website today.

The ChakraCore engine is similar [...]

Mozilla Firefox usage dropped again in 2015, as Chrome’s popularity grew by 8%

Mozilla has not had a good year in 2015, with its browser ending with a mere 12.13% of usage shares.

Firefox actually had a good run, growing steadily for 5 months (between February to June 2015).

As you can see from the chart featured above, thanks to Netmarketshare, the browser climbed up from 11% and went past 12%. But then usage began to drop steadily, from July to October.

This can perhaps be attributed to Windows 10’s launch. The new operating system came with Microsoft Edge, as the default browser, overwriting any user-defined settings for the browser (for eg: Firefox). This happened despite users choosing to preserve their settings and apps, which [...]
