Microsoft has officially announced that it has begun the roll out of te first major update to Windows 10.

Windows 10 version 1511 Build 10586 November Update

The November Update version 1511 is the same as Build 10586 which was released recently to the members of the Windows Insider Program.

Here’s what’s new in the latest version:

Performance Improvements:

Microsoft says it has improved the performance of Windows 10, and that the new version boots 30% than what Windows 7 used to boot, on the same computer which you upgraded. My computer has always booted very fast, so I can’t say for sure whether this is accurate.

The log on screen wallpaper can be disabled now as well.

Microsoft Edge Improvements:

Microsoft Edge has been patched with various security and performance enhancements. The browser now includes the Tab Preview feature which Belfiore showcased in an event previously. All you need to do is hover your mouse cursor over any open tab to get a preview of the page’s content.

Microsoft Edge now includes support for syncing your Favorites and Reading list, across all of your Windows 10 devices.

Cortana improvements:

The digital personal assistant in Windows 10, Cortana, is now officially avaiable in Japan, Australia, Canada and India with localized features. The app will also monitor your events, movie bookings, etc and remind you when and where to go. If you have a digital pen, you can scribble a note in Cortana’s notebook, and the app will recognize phone numbers. email addresses, and physical addresses.

Cortana in Microsoft Edge will now display notifications, for best coupons, when you visit the website of select retailers.

How to download Windows 10 version 1511 Build 10586 Threshold 2  Update:

If you are on Windows 10 RTM Build 10240, and haven’t received the November Update yet, there is a simple fix for it.  Open the Settings app and navigate to the following path:

Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options.

If you have enabled the Defer Upgrades option, uncheck it, and go back to Windows Update and click on “Check for updates”.

This will not work if you updated to Windows 10 within 31 days, or if you uninstalled the November Update. If the latter is the case, you will need to download the Media Creation Tool, and manually download the ISO image.

According to the official Windows 10 November update FAQ, the download size of the version 1511 Build 10586 is about 3GB. But that’s for the 32-bi version, the 64-bit version is slightly higher (hint 3.7GB).

There are several new features for Windows 10 Enterprise Edition users as well. Give the official announcement a read. Oh, and Windows Update shows the November update as the Upgrade to Windows 10, version 1511, 10586, as screen in the screenshot above (courtesy Reddit user retrovertigo).
