WinRAR 5.60 update brings new icons and a ton of new features

by AshwinJune 27, 2018

The WinRAR 5.60 update has been released, and it brings a major overhaul to the design of the interface. All icons in the application have been completely redesigned.

That’s the new design of the GUI, it looks much better, doesn’t it? Here’s what it looked like in version 5.50. You can still get the old icon set from the official website, if you prefer the classic look.

The update also brings a ton of new features. The repair command has been improved for better recovery of RAR5 protected archives. The Advanced option in the create archive screen, which was previously called “Turn PC off when done”, has been renamed to “When done”. The options for the same now allow you to turn off, hibernate or put the PC in sleep mode after the archiving process is done.

Fan of the command line interface? You can now use  -ioff or -ioff1 to turn PC off, or -ioff2 to hibernate and -ioff3 to put the PC in sleep mode. WinRAR will now detect ANSI, OEM and UTF-8 comment encodings in RAR and ZIP archives. This also includes support for UTF-16LE and UTF-16BE in RAR archives. There is a new command line switch (for the WinRAR.EXE) for testing archives which can display more information “im” which can be used with the “t” command.

The Windows Explorer context menu can now be optionally set up to display archiving options. You can enable these options from the Settings menu in WinRAR. If you enter the wrong password when extracting a ZIP archive, WinRAR will prompt you to enter the right one, instead of aborting the process. The same now works with RAR archives with encrypted filenames. The application can now detect GZIP archives which have arbitrary data preceding the actual archive, such as scexe firmware files.

The WinRAR 5.60 Update changes the default unit used by the application for the volume size, with megabytes replacing the bytes unit. No more wondering if a file can be added to an archive for a mail attachment or on a USB Flash Drive with limited storage space or not, right?

The WinRAR 5.60 Update fixes some issues too, including a security issue which is related to corrupt RAR archives and a bug in SFX archives which did not prompt users for the correct password, when a wrong one was entered. You can download the new version of the application from the official website.
