Zoner Photo Studio 17 Review

We all have a lot of photos and, of course, we need a good program for organizing, managing and editing them. But it can be very difficult to find a program which is relatively cheap and still offers a lot of tools. Zoner Photo Studio 17 has everything we need for seamless and comfortable work with image files. It is the program that we call ‘must-have’.

At first glance the main interface of the program may seem very complicated or hard to use but this is only upon seeing the initial screen. Everything is well arranged and easy to use. Zoner Photo Studio 17 is divided into five modules- Import, Manager, Viewer, Editor and Raw.

Import Module– This module is used to copy and move images from a camera, memory stick, etc. onto your computer. The program automatically detects any device that is connected to the computer and lets you easily transfer the contents onto your hard drive.

1

Manager Module consists of seven tabs- Acquire (it allows you to import pictures from any device connected to your PC, for example, from an iPad, tablet and, of course, from any digital camera. Additionally you can also import photos from a scanner, clipboard, via screen capture or extract images from a PDF and any other file).

2

Edit (This tab will be described fully in the Editor Module; here I will limit myself to mentioning only two tools- Convert File Formats and Convert to Web JPEG. You can convert your photos to ten different formats- JPEG, TIF, BMP, etc. and Web JPEG, i.e. to a format which is suitable for the Web).

3

Information (In this tab you can export data from a selcted photo; generate a file list of photos and save it in a text file; manage information, i.e. create EXIF backup, remove EXIF data, etc.; add a digital signature to your photos; rate or label the photos; assign GPS data or get detailed info about photos- name, size, dimension, bit depth, date of creation-, and export it to a text file. Additionally you can edit this information by specifying an image origin (location, city, country, etc.) and its author. The program also includes a very useful tool for searching duplicate photos).

4

Organize (This tab has a collection of tools to organize photos by performing some basic operations. You can create a new folder or edit an existing one, sort your photos by name, date of creation, rating, etc., group them by categories or perform custom sorting. Additionally you can synchronize folders, perform batch renames, compare images side by side and sort pictures by using three levels of size (small, medium and large photos).

5

Create (Zoner Photo Studio allows you to create special output photos such as Panoramas (i.e. photos made from multiple photos and combined in one large photo).

6

3D Images (i.e. several photos which are made from different angles and joined together for creating a ‘stereo’ effect. The program allows you to select a 3D image type (Anaglyph, MPO and JPS / PNS), Anaglyph type (Black-and-white, color, half-color or optimized), edit shared points of the photos and color channel level); HDR via Exposure blending and Tone mapping (i.e. HDR (High Dynamic Range Rendering) photos by using above mentioned techniques. The program offers various settings for HDR editing, for example, you can specify intensity or mask blurring of light and shadow, brightness, contrast, saturation, compression, etc.)

7

Postcards (This program has many templates available for placing your photos onto postcards. You can choose as many photos as you wish; Zoner Photo Studio will automatically arrange them. You can specify some settings- postcard width or height, border width or color, etc.).

8

PDF Slideshow (i.e. create a PDF file from photos and use it as a simple slideshow. You can set a soundtrack to PDF slideshow, select transition effect for each photo (for example, fade-in, slide effect, etc.) and customize some export parameters (title, subject, image compression, JPEG quality, etc.). Additionally the program has a Multi-exposure module which allows you to remove noise or moving objects from photos and align pictures).

9

Publish-This tab consists of four groups- Picture Publishing, Print and Export wizard, Sharing and CD / DVD.

10

Wallpaper allows you to set any photo as the wallpaper for your desktop in one of five modes- fit, center, tile, stretch and stretch proportionally. Slideshow– You can easily configure parameters of slideshows- display options (i.e. play only selected photos or all files in the folder), switch slides (i.e. change switching time between photos manually or leave the default option), display filter (i.e. select file types- bitmap, vector, video or audio), background color (this option lets you change the background color); additionally you can perform some options, for example, add background music (MP3, WAV and WMA audio files are supported), use various effects (panorama, fade-in, fuzz-in, etc.), add text and change the font, style size and color and some others.

11

Calendar– Zoner Photo Studio 17 allows you to create amazing calendars in just seven easy steps: 1. The first step- browse for the desired folder and choose as many photos as you wish to place on the calendar; The second step- select the page size (for example, A3, A4, Letter, etc.), customize the width, height and borders of the page in millimeters; The third step- select a template for the calendar by specifying a date (i.e. month and year) and language to be used(the program supports more than ten languages); The fourth step- here you can set up some parameters, i.e. text properties (font, bold or italic letters, alignment, letter size, background or text color), month or day names (i.e. use abbreviations for the days or not); special days (i.e. select those days which will be marked in red); The fifth step- here you can place the selected photos on the calendar (the program offers three methods- automatically with rotation, automatically and manually) and choose a fitting method (crop, frame or distort); The sixth step- here you can change photos for each month simply by dragging and dropping the images onto the template and adjusting some parameters such as rotation, flipping; The seventh and final step- You can print the created calendar immediately, save or export to PDF, etc.

Templates– The program allows you to create various templates that are conveniently grouped by categories- basic, simple album, etc. You can get more templates from the official site by simply clicking on the “Get more” button.

14

Contact Sheets and Paper Saver– You can also create contact sheets and paper saver, i.e. place your photos on a single sheet. It is very easy; just select page size (A3, A4, A5), specify width, height, orientation, units, page borders, number of columns and rows, spaces between photos, etc. That is all you need to do! Zoner Photo Studio will arrange your photos on a page and you can print, save or export the created sheet to a PDF and even open in in an Editor to perform some other changes to it.

15

Burn Image CD / DVD– The purpose here is rather clear. You can burn all your images onto a CD or DVD immediately, save the contents to your hard drive or create an ISO file with which you can use to burn it later.

17

View– The program offers four viewing modes- Browser (it includes three types- One Browser, Two Browser, stacked and Two Browsers, side by side), Preview, Map and Compare.

Viewer Module consists of five tabs- File (here you can perform some basic actions with images, i.e. open, copy or move to, rename, delete, print, etc.), Copy (rotate your images left or right), Zoom (it allows you to decrease or increase the size of the image), View ( it allows you to view images as a filmstrip or description pane) and Slideshow ( it was described in Manager Module).

Editor Module contains tools for photo editing. They are grouped by several categories- Edit (in this section there are a collection of tools for rotating images or flipping them horizontally and vertically; image resizing (you can change the width, height, resolution and pixels of the an image, etc.), overlay photos with text or other images, change the color depth, etc.), Adjust (here you can enhance colors or exposure, sharpen or blur the image, remove noise, de-interlace photos, adjust color temperature, etc.), Effects (add  various effects to your photos. The program offers a lot of different effects- grayscale, explosion, waves, negative, etc.; Layer (place image, text, symbol, shapes, lines or gradient filter onto the image); Selection (you can stretch, shrink, blur, etc. your images by using several selection tools, for example, rectangular, elliptical, magnetic, etc.).
